In late 2016, after a couple of years of freelance life, I received my first full book commission from Abandoned Bookshop, an e-book publisher dedicated to titles that are out of print or hard to find. Hearing that they were interested in out-of-copyright foreign titles, I successfully pitched them a wonderful 1909 crime classic by Stein Riverton called The Iron Chariot. In that case I couldn’t consult with the author, who has been dead for over 80 years. But I have collaborated closely with the authors of the books I have since translated – all non-fiction – to iron out errors and ensure that they feel the version I am sending out into the world properly reflects their work
